Water….Mother nature’s gift to us!
Water… a pretty impressive element, provided freely by Mother Nature yet totally underrated and underused when it comes to hydrating our bodies and contributing to our overall health picture! Many people have a vague idea they should drink more water but do they REALLY VALUE the true significance of it and the essentiality of it for our miraculous body (70% water by the way!) to carry out its basic functions?!
We are drowning in a world of health issues (pun intended) that could be drastically improved by simply increasing daily water intake amongst humanity. Take allergies for example, a response in the body which triggers the production of histamine and ultimately causes those unfavourable reactions. Histamine helps to move water around the body therefore when we don’t drink enough, the body produces more to retain more water! Ultimately, chronic dehydration can exacerbate allergies! If everybody with allergies knew that upping their water intake could help with this…. we could cut back on the drastic amount of anti-histamine pills being popped which ultimately keep people looped into a repetitive cycle! This is just one example out of a whole host of health issues exacerbated or even caused by dehydration!
Increasing awareness of the body’s need for water!
The sheer need for water in the human body is unbeknown to most people and I feel strongly that an increased awareness would be life changing to our world! This basic yet totally wonderful element is a part of nature and a huge part of us as natures human beings. The body needs water to make our blood fluid and healthy, it needs it for adequate digestion and elimination, it needs it for constantly flushing out toxins, there are many processes that it is absolutely essential for!
What about those who drink plenty of water but other factors of their modern day lifestyle contribute to dehydration? Its true that for every cup of coffee you drink you will need to match it with 4 glasses of water to rehydrate! Thats huge! Coffee is a diuretic which will have you losing water quicker than you can say “one double shot caramel latte please!” Not to mention the sheer stressful effect it has on ones internal environment- it is an all round very dehydrating experience that completely robs the body of water. Yet we seem to live in a coffee craze era where an outfit isn’t complete without a latte in hand. Don’t get me wrong they taste great but if you really knew the message it was sending to your body, would you still want to drink it?
Alcohol will also have the same effect. Completely depriving the cells of water and creating an internal battle for your cells whereby they think they have to go into fight, flight or freeze mode to defend themselves.
How much are you depriving your body of its basic need?
My message here is to encourage you to stop and ask yourself… How much water am I drinking daily? Is it good quality water from a filter? (because the quality of our tap water is another story) How much caffeine or alcohol am I consuming in relation to my water intake? Am I sending my body a soothing and hydrating message or am I depriving it of its most basic need? Start increasing your water intake to 2 litres of fresh, filtered water a day and switch for some great caffeine alternatives like a rooibos tea and watch how your body thanks you for it in the long run!
